You are invited to join a group of like minded people to explore and understand what makes you the person you are. By knowing this, you can discover why you talk and listen as you do. This will raise your self awareness and help you to communicate with greater confidence in the future. The courses are useful to anyone: parents, teachers, voluntary sector workers, health professionals and business people too. Past students talk of light bulb moments that can often change their lives. They are also a suitable foundation for those wanting to apply to the Certificate in Counselling Skills at UEA.
Please note that these courses are not suitable for those wanting to explore deep personal issues, or who may already feel that they are emotionally stretched.
Counselling Skills is about developing your understanding of active listening and relating in a way that embodies an attitude of genuine, non-judgmental understanding. This is in line with Rogers Person Centred Approach to Counselling. The focus of the course is on experiential groupwork to help foster the self awareness needed to develop these essential qualities. It is important to understand that knowing oneself is a fundamental aspect of the effective use of counselling skills. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own experience and listen to others in a caring, respectful and open manner.
Counselling Theory is about exploring the ideas and work of Carl Rogers, who pioneered the person centred approach. This course will give you first hand experience of learning and working in a person-centred environment and provide opportunities for personal development and increased self-awareness. Through exploring his theory behind the concept of personality, and using you own personal experience as a resource, you will learn a great deal about yourself and about how you respond to others. There will be a lot of groupwork and an encounter group day.
